Interview with a Plant Parent: Lana

1. Tell us a little about yourself!

Well first off I’m Alana or as I go by on my page ‘Lana’ as that’s what my parents call me. I live in Tasmania so the climate is extremely unpredictable most days but I love that there is so much flora and fauna right at my front door! I have about 500ish plants at the moment but winter helped bring that number down by about 10 😂

2. What got you into the plant hobby?

I got into my plant hobby thanks to my mum, she’s had a massive green thumb and actually bought my first plant which was a zig zag cactus, we found a mutual love in Hoya collecting and that become our thing, unfortunately she passed away this March so collecting/looking after plants has been an escape for me in someway and makes it much more special as it was our ‘thing’.

    3. What is your most favourite indoor plant you have at the moment?

My most favourite plant I own would have to be my Hoya Serpens basket, it is absolutely covered in peduncles and I can’t wait for spring to see if it will bloom again for me!

      4. What is the next indoor plant in your wishlist?

My next wishlist plant would have to be the ‘boobie’ cactus (has a really long botanical name). I’ve been eyeing one online but I can’t justify $150 on a little cactus when I’m saving for a wedding haha

        5. Share with us one or more of your best plant care tips.

My best plant tip would be, better to underwater than overwater! I’m a serial underwaterer (I don’t think that’s a word but it is now) and I find it’s easier to water them when they are dying for a drink instead of trying to save a drowned plant! Plus Hoyas love drying out!
