Alocasia Regal Shield Care

Alocasia Regal Shield Care

Fortunately, Alocasia is a reasonably tolerant plant once you learn its dos and don’ts. They love high humidity, bright shade, constant moisture, warm temperatures, and soft, porous soil around the year. Along with these, they need space.

Soil

Excellent Alocasia Regal Shield care need rich, loamy organic soil. The soil type with plenty of earthworm action going inside it is perfect for your Alocasia care.

The soil requires perfectly moist retentive, well-drained, slightly acidic, and nutrient-rich. The roots of your alocasia plant need to receive oxygen, or they’ll soon rot and die. Alocasia Regal Shield ideally likes soil having a pH between 5.5 and 7.0.

Light

Alocasia Regal Shield needs 70 to 85% light daily, but never direct light. They can grow well in dappled sunlight conditions. If you like to grow your Alocasia Regal Shield plant outdoors, then about 40% shade cloth seems ideal.

If you need your alocasias to grow indoors, given their size, you are likely to be selecting an ample space to place your plant. Remember to keep them behind curtains to ensure they get filtered sunlight.

Alocasia Regal Shield thrives in the direction of sunlight, so you need to keep rotating its container every week for even, well-rounded growth.

Watering

During the summer season when the temperature ranges between 25°C to 30°C (77°F to 86°F), confidently water your plant every other day. This Alocasia plant responds well to that cycle even though it seems too much. However, it’s important to note that the soil must be super porous to ensure the water drains out quickly.

The safe gauge test for your plant is checking the topsoil, always consistent for most aroids. If the 1-2 inches of the soil completely dries out, water again.

Temperature

Ambient temperature ranges of 20°C to 30°C (68°F to 86°F) throughout the day, and night temperatures not less than 16°C (60°F) seems ideal if you plan to thrive your Alocasia like a beautiful tropical evergreen. However, they are exposed to frost the corms have to be replanted during spring.

This plant becomes slow-growing and dull with prolonged exposure to temperatures ranging lower than 60°F (16°C) and loses its leaves.

Humidity

Your Alocasia Regal Shield will love to grow in high humidity. When you grow this plant indoors in a heated space in desert-dry conditions, you may find its leaf edges to appear a bit crisp.

Anywhere above 80% humidity is good. You are free to use humidifiers, pebble trays, occasional misting, and some sponging of its leaves with a wet cloth to keep your plant hydrated.

Fertiliser

Alocasia regal shield is a heavy feeder. So, feeding this plant is essential, particularly for some mature plants; otherwise, you will not enjoy growing into a luxurious size.

First, create a soil mix of organic nutrients with animal dung manure, good quality sterile compost, or balanced organic manure.

Then, every month, apply a diluted fertiliser reducing the concentration to about a third of what is prescribed.
